Bandhgala : One Garment Many Moods

A Bandhgala is a formal Indian evening suit. It is also referred to as a Jodhpuri suit because it originated in the state of Jodhpur in India. A Jodhpuri suit consists of a blazers and matching trousers, which is worn with an under-garment. A Bandhgala (Bandh Gala) is usually worn on more formal occasions.

The Bandhgala is a jacket that features a standing and closed collar. The jacket can either have long sleeves or can also be sleeveless. It was made famous by India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and is sometimes also called a Nehru Jacket.

The Bandhgala suits, also known as Nehru Suit jacket contributes to being an indispensable part of men’s fashion.

Having its antecedents in the royal attire the Bandhgala has been a part of our heritage and an essential in the wardrobe for as long as we can remember.  Bandhgala has been a part of our legacy. A relic from the past the classic Bandhgala jacket is evolving to be the go-to outfit for the modern man for its versatility and aesthetic appeal. Essentially a band collar the bandhgala can easily transition season and from day to night. Sport this design in the summer season as a waistcoat or get it in velvet for the winter wedding shenanigans! From occasion wear for a wedding to casual Sunday brunches, bandhgala can be paired with anything from crisp cut pants to denim for the many moods and sartorial choices of a modern man.

Everybody makes bandhgalas these days, but no one does the prince coat with its high collar and impeccable cut as well as designer Raghavendra Rathore. The erudite Rajasthan royal, who went ahead and patented this clever alternative to the tux a few years ago, now takes it to the next level with a compact couture collection for women. After all, while Bollywood icons, politicians and young industrialists have been patronising his eponymous luxury menswear label for over 20 years, he has had his share of women clients request the bandhgala — the Duchess of York has a few, we hear, though Rathore is the soul of discretion — and his signature breeches.

3 ways to wear Bandhgala

Business conference
For international conferences where you want to look your best without blending into the crowd, steer clear of the suit-and-tie uniform and pick a Bandhgala suit. Dark colours like navy and black work well and a simple pair of cufflinks teamed with a crisp white pocket square is all you need to accentuate your look. What makes this ensemble impeccable is the fit of the garment itself, so take your time to pick the right one.

Day at the derby
Bandhgalas were originally worn by the Jodhpur polo team, and they look exquisitely stylish when worn with Jodhpur bottoms and a pair of tan brogues. For the derby, colours like brown, khaki, military green and beige work well in fabrics like linen. No derby look is complete without a pair of sunglasses, so a stylish pair is an accessory that will truly elevate your outfit.

Wedding festivities
The most traditional way to wear a Bandhgala  is over a crisp kurta-pyjama set, an outfit that’s in keeping with the dress code associated with Indian festivities. Jewel-toned reds, yellows, greens and purples work well with Bandhgalas when constructed using fabrics such as silk. If you’re opting for a beige or off-white one, add a touch of colour through a vibrant pocket square and finish your look off with a pair of kolhapuris.
